  5. I. XGA/DMQS Display Information File Install Tool User's Guide
  6.  
  7.    A. Purpose of Tool
  8.  
  9.       The purpose of the XGA Display Information File Installation tool
  10.       is to install display information files onto a computer system
  11.       that supports DMQS and will be running an XGA graphics application
  12.       that will be using the DMQS support services to initialize the
  13.       XGA Adapter/Display hardware environment.
  14.  
  15.       Below are the steps involved with running the installation tool
  16.       as well as a description of how the data that is installed by the
  17.       installation is used by other applications:
  18.  
  19.       1. Unpacking/Copying DGS files.
  20.  
  21.          The XGA installation tool allows one to either unpack all display
  22.          files from a supplied packed file OR to copy a specific set of
  23.          display files.
  24.  
  25.          If a packed file is provided, then this packed file will be
  26.          unpacked into individual display files of the name MONxxxx.DGS,
  27.          where xxxx is display ID value for the display that the file
  28.          corresponds to.
  29.  
  30.          If individual display files are to be installed, then the
  31.          installation tool will scan the supplied disk for all files
  32.          matching the file template MON*.DGS and then copy them to
  33.          the specified installation sub-directory.
  34.  
  35.       2. Updating DOS and OS/2 system boot files.
  36.  
  37.          In addition to installing the display files, the installation
  38.          toll will also update the system boot files on the user's
  39.          system hard-disk.
  40.  
  41.          The DMQS services must have a system environment variable defined
  42.          in order to tell it where to look for the display information files
  43.          it needs to initialize the XGA Adapter/Display properly. The
  44.          setting of this environment variable must be done within the
  45.          system boot file. Thus, the installation tool will automatically
  46.          update the system file(s) found in the root directory of the
  47.          start up hard-disk in order to properly set the environment to
  48.          point to the installation directory specified during installation.

  50.       3. What are the MONxxxx.DGS files used for?
  51.  
  52.          The DGS files in the file name form of MONxxxx.DGS will be used
  53.          by the DMQS system services in order to initialize the XGA Adapter/
  54.          Display configuration properly. Without the DGS file, the DMQS
  55.          services would not be able to determine what type of display is
  56.          attached to the system and what display capabilities the display
  57.          has.

  59.    B. Starting the XGA DIF Install Tool
  60.  
  61.       1. Install Tool requirements.
  62.  
  63.          a. Display Information File Install tool files:
  64.  
  65.                - READ.ME      (This information file)
  66.                - DIFINST.EXE  (Install tool program)
  67.                - INSTHELP.GML (Help panel file used by DIFINST.EXE)
  68.                - STARTUP.GML  (Menu file used by DIFINST.EXE)
  69.                - DIFINST.GML  (Menu file used by DIFINST.EXE)
  70.                - 8FDAM.DGS    (Packed XGA Display Information File)

  72.          b. Starting the XGA Display Information File Install Tool.

  74.             To start the XGA DIF Install tool select the "Install XGA DMQS
  75.             Display Information File(s)" option from the DOS Installation
  76.             Program for the XGA Device Driver main menu.

  78.       2. Obtaining help in using the installation tool.
  79.  
  80.          The XGA Display Information File Installation tool has on-line help
  81.          services whereby one can depress the F1 key in order to get help.
  82.          The type of help provided is as follows:
  83.  
  84.             a. General Help Support.
  85.  
  86.                A set of help panels are provided that will describe the
  87.                general aspects of the XGA DIF Installation tool such as
  88.                how the tool can be used, special keyboard key definitions,
  89.                etc.

  91.             b. Field level help support.
  92.  
  93.                Specific field level help is provided whereby one can
  94.                position the cursor on a specific input field and then
  95.                depress the F1 key to obtain help on that specific field
  96.                (i.e. What kind of input is expected for the input field).

  98. II. XGA/DMQS Display Information File Profile Services.
  99.  
  100.    The DMQS profile services found in the DMQS system services will allow
  101.    one to customize the XGA Adapter/Display environment found on a computer
  102.    system.

  104.    A. How to create an XGA Display Configuration Profile:
  105.  
  106.       When you first install the XGA Display Information Files on your
  107.       system, no profile will be created and the XGA Graphics program that
  108.       uses the DMQS services will be provided with the default POST startup
  109.       DMQS values. However, you can override some of the DMQS values via
  110.       the XGA Display Configuration Profile mechanism.
  111.  
  112.       The XGA/DMQS Display Information File Install Tool has an option on
  113.       the main menu that allows you to create the DMQS Profile. This option
  114.       is entitled "Change XGA Display Configuration Profile". There is
  115.       on-line help provided to describe what you need to do to create this
  116.       profile.

  118.    B. How the DMQS profile services work:
  119.  
  120.       The DMQS profile services will look for a file by the name of
  121.       XGASETUP.PRO found in the same directory that has the Display
  122.       Information Files (MONxxxx.DGS).
  123.  
  124.       This file is a ASCII text file which contains a set of GML tags that
  125.       will be used to provide information to the DMQS system services about
  126.       the XGA Adapter/Display environment. This profile allows one to
  127.       override some attributes of how the XGA hardware will be initialized
  128.       and used by graphics applications which use the DMQS system services.

  130.    C. Syntax and content of XGASETUP.PRO:
  131.  
  132.       The file XGASETUP.PRO will be found in the same directory as the
  133.       Display Information Files which are installed by the XGA Display
  134.       Information File Installation Tool (the default path is XGA$DMQS).

  136.       This ASCII text file will contain a set of tags which define
  137.       attributes of the XGA Adapter/Display hardware installed.

  139.       Below is an example XGASETUP.PRO profile:

  158.       The profile above does the following:
  159.       ────────────────────────────────────

  161.       > Informs the DMQS services that the display in slot 5 is a display
  162.         of type 00F0 and that DMQS should use the display file MON00F0.DGS
  163.         to obtain information about the installed display.

  165.       > Informs the DMQS services that the display in slot 8 is a display
  166.         of type F0FF and that DMQS should use the display file MONF0FF.DGS
  167.         to obtain information about the installed display.

  169.       > Informs the DMQS services that when any XGA graphics application
  170.         uses DMQS services that the application will display its graphics
  171.         output on the XGA adapter card in slot 5.

  173.       NOTE: If any of the slot numbers and/or display IDs are invalid when
  174.             read in by the DMQS profile services, then the tag will be
  175.             ignored and it shall not have any affect on how the DMQS services
  176.             initializes the XGA hardware.
